THE FINER DETAILS

Product details

Cornus alba 'Nightfall' is a striking deciduous shrub offering ornamental interest across all seasons. The oval leaves emerge dark green in spring, deepen to a rich, dark purple by autumn, and fall to reveal the plant's real winter treasure: brilliant red stems that glow against a winter landscape. The undersides of the leaves have a distinctive silvery-grey sheen, creating a subtle contrast to the deep-toned foliage. Tiny white flowers appear in dense clusters in spring, followed by blue-white berries.Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. The plant is fully hardy across the UK and grows to around 1.5 metres high and wide. For the best display of red stems, cut back hard to within 5-7 cm from the ground in March, then apply a generous mulch of well-rotted compost.Low-maintenance once established and tolerant of various soil types, 'Nightfall' makes an excellent choice for mixed borders, hedging or planting near water where the stems reflect.
