Winter window boxes have a hard job. They're the first thing you see when you open the curtains on a dark morning, and the last thing visitors pass before they ring the bell. This one is up to it.
Two skimmia sit at its heart, holding tight clusters of deep red buds above glossy evergreen leaves. Three trailing ivy spill over the front edge, and a single cordyline rises from the middle with a spray of narrow, spiky leaves that gives the whole arrangement height and shape. It feels festive without a single bauble, and it doesn't need a single bauble to keep looking good once the decorations go back in the loft.
Each one is planted by hand at Boma in Kentish Town and made to order in a plain terracotta-toned Roma window box. Set it on a kitchen windowsill, line it up along a balcony or put it by the front door, where it greets guests and makes the whole street look a little more cared for.
