These Abingdon 3.5-inch chessmen have a very high quality of finish and attention to detail and exceed all expectations for what you get from such a modestly priced set. Crafted from solid boxwood, each piece has been expertly turned with the knights being hand-carved only by the most experienced and talented of craftsmen. To create the look of real ebony without creating the associated price tag, the boxwood pieces undergo a chemical ebonising process. They are then weighted for perfect balance, and all bases are felted with billiard cloth to protect any playing surface. To accommodate them, we have matched the chessmen with an equally superb sapele board from Spain. With the 3.5-inch king, we have selected the 19.7-inch board from this particular range with the 1.9-inch squares, and the pieces sit perfectly. This design of board is something of a classic, with its clean and basic lines; you will have seen similar ones in famous tournaments.
