These exquisite chessmen were originally registered as design number 58,607 under the British Ornamental Designs Act of 1842 by Nathaniel Cooke, located at 198 Strand, London, on 1st March 1849. Today, these luxurious chessmen are crafted by the renowned wood and ivory turners at John Jacques of London, who have been in business since 1795.
The exquisite "Cooke" design is a nod to the original production of Staunton chessmen. Meticulously handcrafted using high-quality ebony and boxwood, these Reproduction pieces boast a regal 4.4-inch king and showcase the classic Staunton design. Each piece begins as a solid block of wood, skillfully turned before masterful carvers intricately detail and hand-polish to perfection, making them some of the world's finest chessmen.
The entire set, including the king's loyal army, has been carefully weighted for optimal balance and features billiard cloth on the bases for protection against your board's surface. You will notice that the kings in this set are marked with the date "1849" at the base, showcasing the rich heritage of these ebony reproduction pieces. Additionally, the white knight, white rook, black knight, and black rook are all adorned with the distinctive crown emblem of the king, making it easy to identify their rightful place on the chessboard.
